SOLSTICE ORB ORNAMENTS

Each Solstice Orb ornament commemorates the
period of Winter Solstice. For many cultures then and
now, it is period of celebration for this is the time,
that the sun once again begins to return it’s light for
longer periods of time. Each ornament has up to seven layers
of texture and color. The outside layer has a realistic sand texture with hand painted images derived from rock art sites all over the world. Through the clear glass opening one can see interior images superimposed over a night sky.

DIAS DE LOS MUERTOS ORNAMENTS

These works are inspired by Mexico’s Dias de los Muertos celebration which takes place from October 31st through November 2nd in conjunction with the Christian celebration of All Soul's Day. It’s roots began in pre-Columbian times within the Aztec culture who viewed the cycles of life and death as complimentary. Death was perceived not as a time of
mourning, but as a time of celebration.

For my part of the celebration, I have created a series of memorial ornaments. They pay tribute to some of my mentors and to revolutionary heros and heroines (real and mythical ) with either images or text.
